FAQs
-
Is there a conference hotel block?
Yes, we have a limited hotel block at the Hyatt, which is a new hotel that opened just beside the Convention Center since the last RustConf. Visit our About page for links to our room block, rates and more.
-
Is Kosher food available at the conference and in Portland?
For lunch at the conference, the venue will provide special kosher meals. If you'd like to explore other things, especially if you're considering staying in Portland for a few extra days, feel free to reach out for more info on local options.
It may require an Uber or two, but there's a Falafel Food Cart, a bakery, and a Cafe (Cholov Stam and Pareve), all in the Southwest. There's also a Jewish Community Center, Kollel and multiple Chabad chapters, both of which may be of assistance. They can also help track down a daily minyan if needed.
-
Is Childcare available at RustConf?
Childcare will be available on Friday during the conference. Like so many small businesses our previous vendor for childcare shut down during Covid, so we're currently sourcing new vendors, but we're committed to making it happen!. The childcare room we have booked is just down the hall from the conference so you can visit as often as you'd like, pick up the kids to join you for lunch, breastfeed on demand, etc.
When registering for your ticket, be sure to check off the box indicating interest in childcare. We'll then get in touch with all the details.
Childcare is currently full, feel free to reach out just in case anything changes.
-
Are there scholarship tickets available?
Yes! There are $6 tickets available to attend Virtual RustConf for those who might otherwise not be able to afford to join us. You do not need to reach out to apply for one of these tickets. Honor code, they're live on the registration page.
-
What timezone will the stream be in?
The conference will be streaming from Portland, OR, in US Pacific Time (UTC-7) between the hours of 9:30am and 5:40pm, with stretch breaks between all sessions and a roughly 90 minute lunch break. Most of our sessions will be broadcast from the in person stage, and several of our presenters will be joining us from their remote locations.
-
Will there be closed captioning?
Yep! We'll be working with the folks over at Thisten to add captions to all the sessions. They'll run live alongside the talks.
-
Can you convince my boss to send me to RustConf?
We can certainly help! Feel free to use our Letter for Your Boss template to explain why attending RustConf is a worthy investment for you and your company.
-
Is the venue accessible to people with disabilities?
Yes! Visit the Oregon Convention Center accessibility page for more information.
-
Can you provide visa invitations for non-U.S. attendees?
Yes! Submit a visa invitation request to get started.
-
Can you accommodate my need for special meals?
We'll certainly try! You'll be asked about dietary needs on your registration form. Please be specific about your needs, and preferences vs allergies, as they require different accommodations and vendors. Special meal requests can only be honored up until two weeks before the conference, when we have to finalize orders with the caterer.
-
Can you make accommodations for nursing moms?
We can indeed! Please reach out to let us know if you'll be attending and needing a Mother's Room or bringing your baby (or both!).
We will have a private Mother's Room available, with a locked door and refrigerator. We also have a closed-system Spectra pump we can make available to use at the conference center if it would help reduce the volume of things you need to carry from your hotel room (bringing your own flanges and tubing is of course required for sanitation reasons). We'd also love to hear about how else we can help.
Nursing babies are welcome. Please be considerate of your fellow attendees and step out of session rooms when the baby is noisy (it happens :p). We're also happy to set up reserved seating for you, so should you need to step out, your seat will be waiting for you when you return.
-
How do I access the livestream?
We'll send information on how to access the LiveStream about a week before the conference.
-
Can I transfer my ticket?
You can transfer your ticket to someone else until July 25th, 2022 at 11:59pm PST; you can use the form, or the Eventbrite UI directly. If you order swag but later cancel your registration, you may email us to authorize another attendee to retrieve your order; otherwise any leftovers will be up for grabs on the Community Swag Table.
-
Are refunds available?
Tickets were refundable until June 5, 2022 at 11:59pm PST. After that, tickets can only be transferred. Email us to request a refund.
Code of Conduct
RustConf is intended to be an inclusive, welcoming conference for everyone. In particular, we do not tolerate harassment of conference participants in any form. Conference participants violating these rules may be sanctioned or expelled from the conference at the discretion of the conference organizers.
Harassment includes disparaging verbal comments related to gender, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, age, or religion; sexual images in public spaces; deliberate intimidation; stalking; sustained disruption of talks or other events; inappropriate physical contact; and unwelcome sexual attention. Participants asked to stop any harassing behavior are expected to comply immediately.
If a participant engages in harassing behavior, the conference organizers may take any action they deem appropriate, including warning the offender or expulsion from the conference with no refund. If you are being harassed, notice that someone else is being harassed, or have any other concerns, please contact a member of conference staff immediately.
Read through the Rust Project Community Guidelines for a more detailed overview of the intent and goals of the Rust community at large.
On-site, conference staff will be identifiable by their differently colored badges and tshirts (we'll update this closer to the show with the specific colors). If you need help of any kind, to report a bad situation, or anything else not specified that we can help with, please find us on site. For less urgent matters, or advance matters, please email us.
Covid-19 Policies
Pre-Conf TL;DR
A quick wrap-up for those of you already registered and checking here for a last-minute TL;DR:
Step 1
- Registered attendees will have received an email from SafeAccess inviting them to visit the webapp and upload documentation. This invitation process is manual, so please give us 24h or to the next business day before reaching out about a missing email. And check your spam!
- In that first step, you'll set up your account, and submit a photo of your proof of vaccination.
- A human being will manually review this documentation and mark your check-in as Granted, Denied, or Flagged. Before it's been reviewed, it'll be marked Pending. This will typically take 24-48h, and we'll move quicker the closer we are to the conference.
- RustConf staff do NOT have access to your personal health documentation, and this documentation is also deleted by SafeAccess two weeks post-conference.
- Questions can be directed to support at SafeAccess.com.
Step 2
- Assuming your vaccination proof has been accepted, roughly 72h before the conference you'll receive another email from SafeAccess, this time requiring proof of a negative test.
- All at-home/OTC LFT tests currently authorized by the US FDA or your country's equivalent agency are acceptable, as are PCR tests
- Should you need to get a PCR test in Portland, there is a Curative testing location just across the street from the convention center, outdoors at the intersection of NE Martin Luther King Jr Blvd and NE Holladay St. Walk-ups may be accepted but appointments are recommended. Results typically available within two hours.
- A human being will manually review this documentation and mark your check-in as Granted, Denied, or Flagged. Before it's been reviewed, it'll be marked Pending. This will typically take 24-48h, and we'll move quicker the closer we are to the conference.
Step 3
- Show up at the conference, and have your SafeAccess app logged in and ready to show at registration.
- Tada! Access granted.
Please bear with us as this is a new and not-yet-fine-tuned process. We're all doing our very best and appreciate your willingness to accommodate.
There will be no entry for anyone without the SafeAccess all clear, and/or without a mask. If you're missing either, please email to discuss, and do not show up at either the conference or any of the pre-conference events.
All the Other Basics
- Masks are required indoors and when unable to socially distance outdoors
- Full vaccination is required for all event participants and on-site vendors; you will receive an email before the conference (and shortly after you register) with instructions on how to securely provide your documentation for advance verification.
- Testing will be required as well, at-home or PCR. We are operating on the side of being as cautious as possible so that our attendees will be as safe and comfortable as possible.
- Please do reach out if you have detailed questions, thoughts or ideas. We recognize that in-person event attendance is an extremely personal and complicated decision right now and will do our best to help you make the best decision for you and your loved ones.
The Details
What does fully vaccinated mean?
- Minimum threshold: one complete vaccine series. In the US, that means either a single J&J shot, or two of Pfizer/Moderna doses. See the CDC details for precise dates/windows if you’ve only recently completed your series.
- General threshold: whatever your region considers to be their regulatory definition of “fully vaccinated”. In some places that will mean boosters are also required. Our vaccine management app will have the latest info on your local requirements to ensure compliance.
- Note: Different regions and countries follow different schedules for their Covid vaccines, and have different guidance with respect to mixing brands, or may have different vaccine brands entirely. Refer to your local regulatory agency to be sure you’re meeting the requirements of your municipality, and feel free to reach out to the organizers if you have any questions or concerns.
- Booster shots are encouraged as well, and required if they are required to meet the definition of fully vaccinated at your point of origin. For residents of the United States, they are required.
Is testing accepted in lieu of vaccines?
No. Testing is required in addition to proof of fully vaccinated status. SafeAccess will accept either LFT/OTC tests, or PCR tests, from ~24h pre-conference, as proof of vaccination. In the US, all at-home/OTC LFT tests currently authorized by the US FDA are acceptable.
We recommend all travelers plan to arrive at least a day ahead of the conference to leave time for test results to come back and be submitted via the app, and we’ll work to make fast tests available as much as possible. Given the current uncertainty and ebb and flows of needs, err on the side of more time just in case.
What if the name on my vaccine proof doesn’t match my chosen name?
So long as you can somehow demonstrate that the documents are referring to the same person, we’re all good. If sharing your documentation means our compliance team will become aware of your deadname, know that this information will be kept safe and will not transfer to any other conference-related system or data.
What masks are acceptable?
Masks need to be the same masks that would satisfy a mandate, were one to be in place at the time of the conference. Cloth masks, disposable masks, N95, KN95, KF95, etc, covering both mouth and nose. Please avoid putting our staff in the uncomfortable position of needing to ask you to adjust your mask, or to leave.
Who will have access to my vaccine data and how will compliance be ensured?
We've partnered with the folks at SafeAccess to securely collect, review and approve all required documentation, to ensure that only fully compliant attendees gain access to the venue.
SafeAccess is fully hosted on a secure cloud that complies with HIPAA, 27001, 27017, 27018 and SOC 1/2/3;, access is only via authenticated, authorized and encrypted connections.
Accessibility
RustConf is committed to an inclusive environment and experience that are accessible to all. We’ve done a number of things to help accommodate various needs, and are eager to do more, including starting by selecting a venue that is accessible by default.
The RustConf venue is accessible to wheelchair and other mobility devices. That includes but is not limited to:
- Grounds, walks and floor surfaces along accessible routes are stable, firm, and non-slip under most weather conditions. All meeting rooms, ballrooms and exhibit halls are accessible by wheelchair. Doors to rooms have a clear opening of 32 inches.
- Sidewalks, leading from the front driveway loading and unloading zones for shuttle buses and taxis, and leading to the main facility entrances, are free of abrupt changes in surface level. Sidewalks and ramps have a 36-inch clear opening.
- Handrails are mounted 33 inches above the ramp surface, no more than 2 feet from the wall.
- All lobby access points have automatic doors and all thresholds at exterior doors are flush with the floor.
- All stairs have handrails.
- All levels of the building are reachable by elevator. Raised Braille indicates both call buttons and floor designations. Control call and alarm buttons are accessible to persons in wheelchairs. Elevator doors are equipped with an automatic bumper safety system.
- Wheelchairs and electronic convenience vehicles (EVCs) are available to rent through the OCC administration office on Level 2.
The RustConf venue provides inclusive restroom facilities, accommodating all genders, identities, and a breadth of physical access requirements. This includes but is not limited to:
- Gender-neutral, family and gendered restrooms available in multiple locations (with facility-supplied signage plus additional RustConf signage for visibility).
- Restroom entrances have a clear opening of 32 inches and all public restroom entrances have automatic doors. Sinks are mounted at least 29 inches from the floor (measured from the bottom of the apron) for wheelchair knee clearance and the drainpipe allows for toe clearance.
- Faucet controls automatically start through sensors.
- All restroom dispensers and accessories are within reach of a person seated in a wheelchair and all restrooms have at least one stall with a clear, 32-inch opening. The accessible toilet stall is arranged to provide either side or front approach by someone in a wheelchair. Grab bars are of sufficient length located along the sides and back of the accessible stalls. Flush controls and toilet paper rolls are positioned so someone using a front approach to the toilet can reach them.
The RustConf venue provides accommodations for nursing mothers. This includes but is not limited to:
- Two Mamava nursing suites. These private and secure suites are ADA-compatible with a comfortable seating area and are equipped with standard AC power outlets and USB charger ports. All Mamava suites come with a Bluetooth SmartLock that syncs with Mamava’s mobile app. You may also request a door code for entry from the building receptionists in the Administration Office on Level 2 or by calling 503-235-7575.
- A refrigerator is available for storage, in one of two private RustConf spaces (accessible to staff and parents). A mini kitchen is also available for washing, drying and storing parts, if desired.
RustConf provides complimentary tickets for aids of disabled attendees. Please reach out to request such a ticket.
RustConf provides live transcription services for all sessions, available on-site and remotely at a URL provided prior to the conference. Transcripts can also be made available post-conference.
RustConf provides on-site childcare during Friday conference sessions, between the hours of 9:30am and 6:15pm. All caregivers are professional, prepared with CPR/First Aid training, and have had Criminal Background Checks and FBI fingerprinting. There is a structured and enforced procedure for pickups to ensure safety. Caregivers work with the following ratios:
- Children under 1 year old: 1 caregiver for up to 2 children
- Over 1 to under 4-years old: 1:3 ratio (caregiver: children)
- Children over 4-years old 1:6 ratio (caregiver: children)
RustConf provides each attendee with a map of our venue space, including exits, restrooms, and childcare.
RustConf accommodates a wide range of dietary requirements, including food allergies and religious requirements.
RustConf provides a quiet lounge for those with sensory issues or attendees needing breaks throughout the day. The space includes power, internet access, comfortable seating, and does not play any music or other sound.
RustConf makes scholarship tickets accessible for those who may be otherwise unable to join us.
When registering for your RustConf ticket, you’ll be asked about childcare, wheelchair access, nursing facilities, dietary requirements, and all other opt-in services. Please reach out with any questions or additional needs.
Please email us if there’s something more we can do to improve and enhance your RustConf experience.
